About Vitre
Vitré has been designated a ville d'art et d'histoire ( a town of artistic and historic significance) by the Ministry of Culture in recognition of its rich cultural inheritance. Vitré is the 37th French city with the most historic buildings and has 14% of the historical monuments of the department.
Rue de la Baudrière is probably the most atmospheric street in Vitré and a must when visiting the area. Rue de la Poterie is also worth a look for its plethora of ‘porch houses’, whose first floors extend over the street creating an arcade underneath.
A tourist map will help to navigate the around and ensure you do not miss anything.
If you plan to eat beware most places will shut after lunch until the evening.
The Fairytale castle evokes images of princesses in turest with princes recuing them. Dating from the 13th century, the castle, with its wonderful pointed slate turrets, hosted the Parlement de Bretagne on three occasions in the 16th century when plague ravaged Rennes.
The castle now houses a museum you can learn more about the history of the castle and of course Vitré itself.
